CSWA Meeting: May 2010

CSWA Town Hall: Designing a 21st Century Astronomy Career Track

To meet the challenge of designing a 21st century astronomy career track for men and women will require that issues concerning "female-friendly" and "family-friendly" workplaces be addressed. Flexible working hours and flexible "clocks" for promotion and tenure will be essential.

An introduction by CSWA Chair Joan T. Schmelz was followed by discussion and questions from the audience.

Special Session on Addressing Unconscious Bias

In this session, we wanted to introduce the concept of unconscious bias and also give recommendations on how to address it using a faculty search committee as an example. The process of eliminating unconscious bias begins with awareness, then moves to policy and practice, and ends with accountability. We used information from the University of Michigan Advance STRIDE web site as a guideline.
