PhD Position in Computer simulations of galaxies and star clusters
Job Summary
6009 WA

Job Description
The University of Western Australia node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) invites applications for a PhD scholarship in computer simulations of galaxies and star clusters under the supervision of Prof. Kenji Bekki.
The successful PhD student will be involved in either (or both) of the following two projects (depending on the student's skill): (i) new development of a simulation code for galaxy-scale chemical enrichment, dust physics, and various feedback effects (in particular, for very low-surface brightness galaxies, like ultra-diffuse galaxies, UDGs) and (ii) simulating the formation of massive star clusters in galaxies using star-by-star chemodynamical code (in particular for UDGs). In this project, the predicted properties of galaxies and star clusters will be compared with the corresponding observations. Therefore, this project would suit students who are interested in developing simulations codes and performing simulations of galaxies and star cluster using supercomputers in Australia (e.g., OzSTAR, SETONIX etc).
For further information regarding the project, please contact Porf. Kenji Bekki; [email protected]
The diverse scientific environment at ICRAR will allow the student to work closely with many other theorists and radio/optical astronomers. Depending on the direction of the project, the student will have an opportunity to present at national and international conferences, as well as to spend some time overseas working alongside other simulation experts.
ICRAR is one of Australia’s top astronomical research institutes. Established in 2009 as a high profile equal joint venture between Curtin University and UWA, ICRAR is a leading organization in the international Square Kilometre Array project. ICRAR/UWA hosts a vibrant and friendly research environment where PhD students carry out cutting-edge projects in observational and theoretical astrophysics, often including work in "Big Data" methodologies and technologies. Situated on the Swan River, UWA is one of Australia’s most picturesque campuses. Its open courtyards, lush and verdant, are a place to study and relax, taking advantage of Perth’s beautiful climate.
