Video Conferencing

Video conferencing is now a standard way for astronomers to both communicate with colleagues and to teach. The use of video conferencing, especially for larger meetings, is also very sustainable since it can reduce the amount of physical travel required. Below we give some options and suggestions for video conferencing software and techniques.

There are many video conferencing applications. A few of the most popular are given below. Some are free, or have free options. The AAS Sustainability Committee does not endorse any of these products.

You should keep a few standard practices in mind in order to increase the likelihood of a successful video conference. A good list of best practices can be found here. A few basic suggestions are:

• use the fastest network connection possible
• if the network is slow, stop the video feed first
• use a headset and microphone for best audio clarity, otherwise make sure that the microphone has noise canceling (e.g., ClearOne)
• test the connections before any important meeting
• mute when not speaking
• if possible, get to know the people in person
